Mapping community values for regional sustainability in the Lower Hunter Region

The report, Mapping community values for regional sustainability in the Lower Hunter Region, contains the key findings from the community values survey conducted by the hub in the Lower Hunter Region. In the report, Dr Christopher Raymond and Professor Allan Curtis demonstrate the robust, replicable method for mapping community values for regional sustainability. 

Community values broadly refer to the social values that individuals assign to places on the landscape (for example, aesthetic, recreation, biodiversity), as well as the development preferences that individuals assign to places on the landscape (for example, residential, industrial, tourism). The research focus was on urban and rural residents who were adults, rather than the wider population in the Lower Hunter Region. A survey response rate of 39.3% (393 completed surveys returned from the sample of 1,001) was achieved.

The  research was commissioned by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (Regional Sustainability Planning line area). A research team from the Charles Sturt University was engaged to undertake the study through the Landscape and Policy Research Hub at the University of Tasmania. The report is an output of the Landscapes and Policy Research Hub.

The report is published in three volumes:

  1. The Executive Summary - an easy to access and read extract from the full report.
  2. The Final Report - the full report, inclusive of the executive summary, but not including Appendix D.
  3. Appendix D - the maps showing the social value and preference hotspots. Published separately due to the large file size and for ease of acess while reading the full report.
